FG/LABOUR CLOSE RANK

The Federal Government and central labour organisations yesterday resolved the contentious issue of the mode of implementation of a new minimum wage of N18, 000 signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan last March.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had threatened to embark on a strike action if government at all levels refused to implement the new wage across board because government had insisted that only officers within Grade Level (GL) 01 – 03 would benefit.
The government side was led by the Secretary of the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator Anyim Pius Anyim while presidents of the NLC and the TUC Comrade Abdulwahed Omar and Comrade Peter Esele respectively represented organised labour.
Minister of Labour and Productivity Chief Emeka Wogu who read the communiqué of yesterday’s closed door meeting said the Federal Government will comply with the National Minimum Wage Act as signed by President Goodluck Jonathan.
According to him, the Federal Government is committed to applying the relativity adjustment to all federal workers across board.
He said “In the spirit of this negotiation that whatever role anybody plays especially from the TUC and NLC, nobody will be victimized by government and this is the conclusion. I think when they finish from their NAC (National Administrative Council) meeting they will communicate government on the outcome of such meeting.”
On his part, Comrade Omar of the NLC stated that “basically, the discussion on relativity would have been concluded by 31st of July but unfortunately, it’s segmented because of one or two areas of non-agreement, majorly in the area of adjustment across the board, as a result of compliance with the new minimum wage Act, this adjustment now cut across the board in order to maintain some reasonable relativity.”
“But unfortunately we saw immediately thereafter that everything was to start with Grade Levels 01 - 06, I am happy that we have been able to sort this today and also the issue of adjustment cutting across board will be sorted out by the joint technical committee.”
Also speaking, President General of the TUC Comrade Esele told journalists that the outcome of the negotiation would be discussed at the National Executive Council (NEC) of his organisation.
